The Development of Western Consciousness

This site is an attempt to convey some of my ideas about human consciousness today, in the past and the future. By consciousness I mean a human's relationship to the world; how (s)he perceives it in relation to him/her-self.

In order to understand our current perception of the world we need to understand where we have come from, so that we may compare our current situation to the past to get an idea of the progression we are going through. Similar to looking at a line graph (for example) of the stock market, it's the general trend which gives you an idea of what is happening, rather than any of the individual points on the graph in isolation.

I suggest you start reading from the start and go through to the finish, because it is the differences between the time periods which are important, not the time periods in isolation.

I am not sure where I got these ideas from, I think I have synthesised them by combining many people's ideas, but I really can't remember. I don't think that I have come up with anything new, I am sure that everything you are about to read has been thought of before, although I have never seen it written down anywhere... perhaps Rudolf Steiner?
